Born in 2009 with the formation of NXT Health, a non-profit whose mission is to sponsor collaborative design innovation, Patient Room 2020 is a next-generation inpatient care environment that strives to improve patient experiences and optimize caregiver performance. Located at the DuPont™ Corian® Design Studio in New York City, the prototype features Traxon 1PXL Cove Light XR in dynamic white installed along the perimeter of the ceiling above the patient bed, as well as 16PXL Board RGB, both located behind Barrisol®. The ceiling offers a variety of abstract graphic elements, intended to intrigue and soothe the wide array of demographics represented in a busy healthcare facility. Installed in the perimeter of the “patient ribbon” is Traxon String RGB, which can be changed to alert hospital staff of an emergency or visually compliment the aesthetics on the Barrisol®. Additionally, Nano Liner Allegro AC XB provides illumination near the doorway of the bathroom and the nurses’ station. e:cue Lighting Control Engine mx offers a unique hygiene solution in this installation by sensing occupancy and alerting staff to clean their hands through the visual cue of red lights at the sink. While washing, sensors in the sink relay elapsed time to the server, signaling lights to flash green when the proper time has passed. Patient Room 2020 is an excellent example of how lighting and controls play a key role in healthcare environments.
